von Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (20.08.2013) Eine Band, die im Black Metal-Furor geboren wurde, aber 20 Jahre später eklektisch Pop- und Rock-Klassiker covert, sich dazu im Ambient und Jazz tummelt, geht viel weiter, als die aus Hellhammers Asche auferstandenen Celtic Frost. Die Norweger Ulver sind schon seit der Schwarzmetall-Trilogie, zu Beginn ihrer Karriere, das mit Abstand größte Chamäleon dieser Art. Das Coveralbum „Childhoods end“ zelebrierte das Erlangen ihrer Volljährigkeit, jetzt geht es gen Klassik. „Messe I.X - VI.X“ basiert auf einer gemeinsamen Aufführung mit dem Kammerorchester der Stadt Tromso 2012. Die sechs Kompositionen passen in keinen Metal- oder Rockkontext, der zwölfminütige Opener „As Syrians pour in, Lebanon grapples with ghosts of a bloody past“ ist ein reines Streicherwerk. In dem Song „Shri schneider“ finden elektronische Texturen, Effekte und verfremdete Normalinstrumente Zugang, in „Glamour box“ sägt gar die E-Gitarre. „Song of man“ und „Mother of mercy“ basieren auf Garms zartem, aber ungeheuer leidenschaftlichem Gesang.
