Diese Deluxe-Version des Fates Warning-Klassikers kommt im Boxset und beinhaltet das Original Album, die Live-Version mit Bonusmaterial ("We only say goodbye" - Soundcheck & Scorpions-Studio-Coversong "In trance"), eine Bonus-Disc (2 Demos plus Remix von "Part II) sowie eine Live-DVD ("apsog" Live in Europe, June 1997/"apsog" Live at The Whisky, April 1998/"We Only Say Goodbye" Live in Athens 1999).

Gemessen an den Vorgängern ist das aus einem einzigen Song in zwölf Sektionen bestehende Album "A pleasant shade of gray" in der Tat grau; allerdings in vielen Schattierungen. Oft als Jim Matheos Solo-Projekt angesehen sind Fates Warning hier düsterer und sphärischer denn je.

von Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (29.09.2006) Dieses aus einem einzigen Song in zwölf nummerierten Kapiteln bestehende Werk gehört zu den umstrittensten und gleichzeitig mutigsten Statements von Jim Matheos. Vom Aufbau her fordert es das bereits üppige "The ivory gate of dreams" heraus, welches fast zehn Jahre zuvor für Sänger Ray Alder eine besondere Herausforderung bei seinem Einstiegsalbum "No exit" (1988) darstellte. Allerdings hat sich die Band von ihrem bombastischen, mystischen Klanguniversum über die Jahre und Alben wegbewegt. "A pleasant shade of grey" ist in seiner Gesamtheit erdrückender, dunkler und wesentlich perkussiver. Die Melodieführung wird beinahe komplett Rays Stimme anvertraut, Gitarrengenius Matheos bleibt selbstverordnet kurz angebunden. Statt Bombast herrschen deftige Riffs, bedrückende akustische Gitarren, einen dominanten Bass und immer wieder sphärische Keyboardeinlagen von Kevin Moore (ex-Dream Theater). Zu dessen Solovehikel Chroma Key gibt es einige Parallelen.
